Each of these can provide information about laws and regulations, and about programs specifically designed for business within their jurisdiction.

Canadian Law: A History
This part of the World Wide Legal Information Association Web site was prepared by Llyod Duhaime, a Victoria, B.C. lawyer. Many of the sections are taken from debates of the House of Commons.

Canadian Legal History - Constitutional Documents

Provides history of Canadian law. Information about the first treaties signed with Aboriginals, the first laws of 1611, Charter of the Hudson?s Bay Co., the first movement for women's suffrage, anecdotal stories of rough justice of old times. Information on the birth of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

World Legal History

Chief Justice of British Columbia Finch?s Home Page
Recognizing that there is increasing interest in the judicial system, the former Chief Justice of British Columbia, Justice McEachern set up this site to enhance public understanding about the courts, the judiciary and the law in various ways. It was created as an easy, electronic vehicle for his own comments or announcements about legal and judicial matters of general public interest, and for the Internet public to inquire directly about such matters. In 2001 the site was taken over by the new Chief Justice, Justice Finch.

American Risk and Insurance Association

Risk Theory Society
The Society is a self-administered organization within the American Risk and Insurance Association. Its purpose is to foster research into topics in risk theory and risk management.

Canadian Lawyer Index

Related services include investigation services, electronic legal research, trustees in bankruptcy, etc. There is also the ability to file complaints about lawyers and judges.

The Legal Profession in Canada

Lawyers in Canada are governed by provincial law and by professional bodies established under the governing legislation (Law Societies). In addition, lawyers choose to associate themselves in professional bodies for the purposes of continuing legal education, public service and education, and legislative reform (Bar Associations). Some of these bodies are federal and some are provincial. The sites listed below include the Law Societies of each province and a selection of other professional bodies. Most Law Societies maintain a lawyer referral service that can be accessed through the web site or through a toll-free number provided by the web site.

Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Canada
The Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Canada has been promoting excellence in alternative dispute resolution in Canada since 1974. It is a national professional association, which exclusively serves the needs of arbitrators and mediators from all sectors of the economy. It is responsible for providing training, certification, and professional development opportunities in alternative dispute resolution.

Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society
The Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society is a not for profit organization which provides education and information to its members and the general public on solving disputes more effectively. The Society has been in existence since 1982 and has over 600 members engaged in the practice of arbitration and mediation throughout the province. Membership is open to anyone interested in alternative dispute resolution and has tripled in the past two years, reflecting the interest in ADR processes and the many opportunities for applying them in new situations, such as schools, hospitals, amateur sports, neighbourhood disputes and consumer complaints.

Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution
The Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution (SPIDR) was organized in 1972, growing out of the labour-management mediation and arbitration movement. The most respected leaders and practitioners of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes saw a need for a professional association of conflict resolvers (mediators, arbitrators, and other dispute resolution professionals).

The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) is a medical mutual defence organization. It is an association of the profession that is operated by physicians for physicians. Compulsory licensing of Pharmaceuticals
This site discusses some of the concerns being expressed currently about the drug ciprofloxacin which is used in the treatment of anthrax. Public and government concern over the availability of a sufficient supply of this drug has arisen due to the anthrax threat in the United States following the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York and Washington. The deaths of several Americans from inhalation anthrax has led to a heavy demand for ciprofloxacin which the patent holder may or may not be able to meet.

The site has information on the educational requirements needed to become a certified general accountant and information on the various programs offered through this organization. They also set the professional standards for certified general accountants.

Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants
There's a section called the CA profession which explains what a chartered accountant is, and what a chartered accountant can do for you. Under "Standards and Guidance", sets out the standards of the profession. The site has information on the accounting standards board.
